UPSEU Paul T. Burch Memorial Scholarship (Dependent Children)

WINNER CHOSEN BY ESSAY
DEADLINE: POSTMARKED BY JULY 1st OF EACH YEAR

QUALIFICATIONS:

All dependent children (up to age 23 as of July 1) of UPSEU members in good standing are eligible to receive the Paul T. Burch $1,000 scholarship award per school year to attend an undergraduate accredited college full-time (minimum of 12 credits per semester).

All dependent children of UPSEU members in good standing are eligible to receive a $1,000 scholarship to attend a trade or vocational school full-time leading to certification/licensing in a specific field. The course of study is subject to the approval of the Scholarship Committee.

Applications must meet the following criteria:

One child per application.
One application per child.
Applicants must be in a course of study relating to Service to the community or the betterment of the lives of others.
Applicants must attach a 500-1000 word typewritten double-spaced essay (see application).

The winners are chosen on the basis of their essay. If chosen, you will be notified by mail of their award and the need to supply the following:

A copy of the dependent's birth certificate or documentation of legal dependency to the member.
Photo of Child (preferably high school or college photo).

Payment of Award:

Awards shall be granted an award of $1,000 per school year ($500 Fall, $500 Spring).
Awards will be paid at the end of each school semester upon receipt of final grades.
The dependent child must maintain no less than a 2.0 (C) grade point average per semester.
Awards will only be paid for accredited courses of study.
Awards are not transferable.

The Paul T. Burch Memorial Scholarship will be awarded based upon the best four (4) essays submitted. Under no circumstances are the essays judged by the region from which they were submitted; they will be assigned to another region to maintain impartiality.

The UPSEU scholarship committees reserve the right to reject an application if false or incomplete information is provided or filed late. It may from time to time adjust the criteria, procedures, forms, etcetera as is deemed necessary to protect the integrity of the scholarship program and/or ensure its effective use and administration. Scholarship committee members, officers and staff of UPSEU are not eligible for participation in the scholarship program. Scholarship Recipients will have a one year wait to apply for future scholarship awards.

Winners are notified by mid-August by mail. The list of winners is also posted on our website: upseu.org and newsletter (The Advocate)

IN ORDER TO BE ELIGIBLE TO RECEIVE THE PAUL T. BURCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP, the dependent student must be studying in a field which could be considered one which leads to the betterment of the lives of others or serves the greater good of the community.

Paul T. Burch was the Upstate Regional Director of UPSEU until he lost his battle with cancer in 1996. Paul left a lasting impact on the entire public sector union movement. For Paul, working to improve the lives of working men and women was not just a job; it was a life’s vocation. He devoted more than three decades to right wrongs, to fight injustices, and to tirelessly advocate for the underdog.

Awards are granted on the basis of the essay.Winners will be notified by letter sent to our member indicating the award and procedures for receiving payments. The Union will publish a list of recipients on our website: upseu.org and in our newsletter (The Advocate). Member must be in good standing throughout the scholarship school year.
