After months of denial by the Wallingford Personnel Department, UPSEU Wallingford Supervisor, Dennis Hlavac, received justice on the job. Dennis is one of Wallingford Supervisors represented by UPSEU Local 424. Since 2006, member Hlavac, Chief Appraiser in the Assessors office had followed all of the internal procedures to get a reclassification based on the town’s job evaluation matrix.
In early 2007, the Director of Personnel denied Dennis’ request to be reclassified from a pay grade six to pay grade seven. Dennis asked for UPSEU’s help to appeal this decision to the Wallingford Personnel and Pension Appeals Board. After two lengthy hearings lasting over eight hours in total, the Board ruled in Dennis Hlavac’s favor and provided him with his justified reclassification to a grade seven.
UPSEU’s Connecticut Regional Director Wayne Gilbert who headed up Hlavac’s case stated, “This was a very simple case which the Town could have settled months prior by following its own standards established in the matrix. Unfortunately, the Wallingford administration brought on its attorneys and made a mountain out of a simple reclass.” Unit President, Rick Vanski said, “I am so happy for Dennis. This reclass was well deserved and our union team came through for Dennis and all of us once again.”
