Douglas Van Valen 1979-2007

The staff and members of United Public Service Employees Union would like to convey their sincere condolences to the family of Douglas Van Valen, a UPSEU Borough of Oradell Department of Public Works employee. Van Valen was tragically killed in a workplace accident on October 2nd, just short of his twenty- ninth birthday.

In addition to his DPW duties, Van Valen served as a volunteer firefighter in the Oradell, New Milford and Bergenfield Fire Departments. Fighting fires was Van Valen’s passion and as New Milford Fire Chief Dave Stormer said, “He was one of the best firefighters we had.” Van Valen, a veteran of the U.S. Navy served two tours in the Persian Gulf, aboard the USS aircraft carrier John C. Stennis. He will be missed by all those who knew him.
