On August 3, 2012 Governor Dannel P. Malloy signed Public Act 12-43 into law which grants Connecticut school paraprofessionals their long overdue rights under the Family Medical Leave Act.
The Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) allows workers time off to care for themselves or family members when they are ill. Previously, paraprofessionals did not qualify for FMLA, since as ten month employees they did not meet the 1,250 annual work hour requirement.
This previous injustice has now been corrected and under the new FMLA provision, paraprofessionals can now receive the same FMLA benefit if they work 950 hours per year.
