Gov. Paterson Signs Bill to Extend COBRA Coverage for New Yorkers
Updated On: Dec 14, 2009
Last week Governor David Paterson signed into law three bills that will make health insurance more affordable and improve access to health care for New Yorkers.
The first bill allows employees who lose their job to extend the period of time for COBRA coverage from 18 to 36 months.
The second bill permits families to cover their unmarried children through age 29 under their job-based insurance. Under the new law premiums would be paid by the individual, not the parent's employer. This would be less expensive under the group policy rather than individual policies.
The third bill includes a series of managed care reforms to make health insurance claims easier to process so consumers can receive the care they need.
